Take your Spatial Finder and shove it!

OHMYGOD! I can't believe it! John Syracusa is at it again! He is one of my favorite tech writers, but on this he is wrong, wrong, wrong...

Some of his points about the Spatial Finder:

  • Coherency: there is a direct, one-to-one relationship between folders and windows.
  • Stability: files, folders, and windows go where you move them, stay where you put them, and retain all their other "physical" characteristics: size, shape, color, location, etc.
Really, the idea that human beings sofisticated enough to use computers are confused when folders and windows do not hold a one-to-one relation is absurd. I can deal with it, everybody can. By the way, doesn't this argument implies that we have to get rid of aliases? The point of stability is well taken, but where does the Finder fails at this? Don't confuse the metaphor with reality! is not the same it shouldn't behave the same way...

One thing you'll never see in this type of arguments is any sort of scientific study, why? the guys that should be doing the study know they will loose the rest of us have better things to do. Come to think of it. I'll conduct the study, just need a grant of around 20.000$...

The assumption that the Finder is the computer is wrong and stupid. Most of us work on programs and see the Finder rarely. The Finder is just another program, not the center of the computer experience. Data creation/acquisition is the center of the computer experience. The Finder is just an organizer...

Finally, how come this guys can't come up with a solution better than having two finders? They know we are not going to get rid of the wonderful column view so they want that to be apart from the mythic and quite useless Spatial Finder. Feel free to sell or give away an example of what you want guys... anytime... when you feel "ready"... Take your time... Give it up guys, in the inmortal words of The Beasty Boys You are laying up the syrup thick, but we ain't waffles, we ain't having it...
