Safire gets it

Caracas, California. Voters of Venezuela and California have a lot in common. Both could end up upsetting the election of their chief executive, but that is where the similarities should end. By William Safire. [New York Times: Opinion]

He makes two small mistakes. First, he believes Chavez had to agree to the recall referendum, when it is actually in the constitution. The fact that there has to be an agreement just points to the murky state of laws in Venezuela. Second, he believes Chavez can run. That is not so, or, at the very least, is unclear. Of course, the chavistas want Chavez to run, as one of them put it to me: "We don't have anyone else who could be our candidate?", while the opposition refuses... No agreement on this yet. The opposition is so divided is not even funny. If Chavez wins the history of this period will be one where greedy bastards killed all hope for venezuelans.
