Perón, Pinochet and Patience. Venezuela, in its worst political crisis since 1958, can benefit from regional lessons. By Jorge I. Dominguez and Steven Levitsky. [New York Times: Opinion]

Most of the Venezuelan opposition would disagree, but I totally agree with this article. I think the option of the referendum after August should have been hammered after the April embarrassment of the opposition. Instead we got the repeated, false, refrain Chávez will be out in a month, we are still getting it! If instead the opposition had concentrated on the referendum and, more importantly, on the elections afterward, it would have prevailed instead of destroying the country. The only objection I can think of this plan actually comes from the government side: Chávez wouldn't be able to run. That means the government party will lose for sure, it also means the opposition wouldn't have proved their point (the majority doesn't want Chávez). That was the price to pay, I think it was worthy.
