Spy Agency Mined Vast Data Trove, Officials Report. The volume of information harvested, without court warrants, is much larger than the White House has acknowledged. By ERIC LICHTBLAU and JAMES RISEN. [NYT > Home Page]
Most commentary about the illegal eavesdropping seems very pro-Bush, and missing the point. The reason a warrant is necessary, albeit a secret warrant in a secret court, is because the system can be easily be abused. Think about it, what if a leader wants to talk to the terrorists and explore if there is a way to create spaces for a truce, well, the fact that he/she communicated with them could be used against him/her. That's the center of the case that created the law. Now, who is willing to bet the system is getting abused? We are living under a new McCarthyism and you know what that created the last time?
