The painstakingly designed campaign against the iPod continues. In an otherwise useful article about digital music formats an copy-protection (they like to call it DRM, Digital Rights Management, but it is copy-protection nevertheless), this New York Times article, manages to point out about a dozen times, that the iPod doesn't play music from the Microsoft based stores. They don't mention that the other players don't play music from iTunes, they say, that iTunes music can not be play in the other players, that way it is always Apple's fault, despite the fact that the other stores could have chosen a different option. But that is not the worst part, the worst part, the one that makes me think this is not casual but orchestrated, is that, once again, they fail to mention that you won't be able to buy music from any other store but iTunes unless you use a recent version of Windows. That's right. Tying to the majority chosen Operating System is okey, but tying to the majority chosen Mp3 player is not. That despite the fact that Apple does not have a monopoly n the Mp3 player space (the barrier of entry is almost nil), while Microsoft still has the monopoly in the OS space and has been found to illegally abuse it.
