Last night, I dreamed that the company I work for decided to bind all its product manuals in covers made of rich, delicious imported chocolate. We called it chocumentation.

Silicon Valley Is Seeking Peace in Its Long War With Microsoft. Many in the tech sector have come to accept that the legal system can do little to resolve their quarrel with Microsoft. By John Markoff. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]

EFF dream gig: technical director. How's this for a dream job? EFF is looking for a Technical Director to run special projects to enhance liberty and screw with The Man (i.e., making kick-ass, user-friendly PVRs; turning white-box PCs into software-defined-radio spectral analyzers, hacking on anonymizing onion-nets, etc).

This person will be responsible for managing four members of EFF's technical staff and their various projects. Technical staff responsibilities include keeping our internal systems running and providing expert support to our attorneys and members. It also includes actively building, and supervising the building of, technologies that advance free speech and privacy. The technical director will be responsible for creating a cogent technology strategy for EFF. The director must be a team player. This person must be a good writer, good speaker and good listener. This person may be called on to be an expert witness, conference speaker, declarant in a court case, or debater against entertainment companies or government attorneys. Comfort with advocating for a position essential.

I would love this job! And I think I would do well on it... I doubt the EFF would be willing to sponsor me for an H1- visa, though.

Here and elsewhere I have talked about the foolishness of equating IDs and ID checking with security. A friend visiting Venezuela form another south american continent related this story to me. Which, I think, proves my point. Someone close to him was involved in some of the planning involved for the VIP gathering so he didn't wanted his name to be known. The story os true, though.

This is a bad thing?.

So there seems to be widespread agreement that what Google did by releasing news about G-Mail on April Fools Day was a stroke of PR genius (as well as a torpedo into the broad side of Yahoo).

A sign that I've long since lost my PR edge is that I first thought it was a joke and then advised the whole world against saying important things on the one day in the year when people are likely not to take what you say seriously.

The Quadra 4-in-1 pen from Belkin sounds like a great combo. It has a pen, a PDA stylus, a LED flashlight (great for reading!) and a laser pointer. I'm thinking of getting one to substitute my rotting Rotring multi pen...

F1: Schumacher on top. Ferrari's Michael Schumacher sets pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix. [BBC News | News Front Page | UK Edition]

Schumacher in Pole in Bahrain! Barrichello second. The spectacle is diminished by the changes made to respect muslim traditions. No scantly clad women, no champaign in the podium and little audience for the qualifying...
